Kumar Research Lab

Our Research

Dr. Kumar's lab’s focus is to understand neural processes regulating autonomic, respiratory, mood, and cognitive function in a variety of patient populations, including obstructive sleep apnea and heart failure, using various non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy procedures. His research team also seeks to examine the processes contributing to post-surgery cognitive deficits and delirium in patients with coronary artery bypass grafting and valve repair. Their patient populations have shown that regulatory brain sites controlling autonomic, respiratory, mood, and cognitive functions are abnormal in these conditions. The group seeks to determine the extent of injury progression as syndromes continue and to examine preventative strategies before severe consequences, such as hypertension or stroke, arise.
